The walk follows the Walls of Lucca bastion by bastion, each with its own name: Santa Maria, San Paolino, San Donato, San Regolo, San Pietro, among others. You climb by stairs and ramps, not all of them suited to everyone, and the grassy banks on either side are off limits. It does not promise entry: at Baluardo San Regolo the underground areas need a separate ticket.

The walls mark the edge of the old town: the gates are its passages. This walk touches some of the gates, seen from outside, including Porta San Pietro and Porta Santa Maria. The pin marks the structure, not an entrance: the listing doesn't say whether you can go in, what it costs, or when it opens. Signs on site count.

In the Middle Ages Lucca had around a hundred and thirty towers. Almost all were pulled down or truncated in the sixteenth century. Only two survive intact: the Guinigi tower and the Torre delle Ore. The Guinigi was built in the fourteenth century by the Guinigi bankers, topped with a hanging garden of holm oaks. Climbing either one requires a paid ticket. Booking is advised on weekdays, required at weekends and on public holidays.

This walk gathers Lucca's churches beyond the Cathedral, including San Michele in Foro. Where services are held, respect them. The municipality describes San Cristoforo as closed to worship and now used for exhibitions. San Martino and Santi Giovanni e Reparata have fixed hours and a paid entrance; San Frediano also has set hours. Check on site.

The Ducal Palace stands where Castruccio Castracani built a huge fortress in 1322. The Lucchesi themselves tore it down in 1369. The palace was spared: it became the seat of government again. In 1815 the Congress of Vienna made Lucca a Duchy under Maria Luisa di Borbone. She turned it into a grand residence. Today it holds the Risorgimento Museum and the Paolo Cresci Museum. The other stops, like Palazzo Pretorio, you take in from outside.
